The war of 1812 left "The Star-spangled Banner" in its wake, its most important musical result; but as, with the exception of the defence of Fort McHenry and the battle of New Orleans, the important victories were won upon the seas, it is natural to find much of the music of the epoch consisting of sailor-songs.
